Spring has finally sprung and that mean's the ground is ready for planting! So what to plant in May? Keep reading to find out what you should sow in May to have your favorite vegetables, herbs, and fruits all ready to consume by the end of the season!
What to Plant in May: A Sowing Guide
Cabbage, Cauliflower, Sprouts, and Broccoli
May is the last month you can sow Brussels sprouts so that they'll be ready by the end of the year. The same applies for cabbage and cauliflower, although you can still plant broccoli until July! Zucchini, Squash, and Pumpkins
For zucchini, squash, and pumpkins it's best to start sowing the seeds indoors and then transplant them outdoors the next month (in June). This will ensure that the seedlings grow successfully for a bountiful, healthy crop. To learn more about how to grow the above vegetables, simply click on the vegetable you want to learn more about!
Fennel and Kohlrabi
Sow fennel and kohlrabi seeds outdoors but make sure to reverse some seeds for a second and third planting later on in the season. These vegetables grow quickly, so if you sow now, you'll have plenty of time for second and third rounds! Leafy Vegetables: Kale, Spinach, Swiss Chard, Chinese Broccoli, Mustard Greens
Leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, Swiss chard, Chinese broccoli, mustard greens, and others can now be sown directly outdoors, although be wary of cold nights. If the nights get too chilly, be sure to cover them! To learn more about how to grow the above vegetables, simply click on the vegetable you want to learn more about!
Peas and Melons
Peas can be sown directly outdoors, while melons will need to be started indoors until all danger of cold has passed. To learn more about how to grow the above fruit and vegetables, simply click on the vegetable you want to learn more about!
Chilies, Peppers, and Cucumbers
Because it is still early in the season, sow chilies, peppers, and cucumbers indoors first and then transplant outdoors once they each attain a few leaves. To learn more about how to grow the above vegetables, simply click on the vegetable you want to learn more about!
Herbs
Sow basil, cilantro, chervil, dill, lovage, parsley, and sorrel. Make sure to protect them by bringing them under cover at night or covering them with a cloche.
Root Vegetables
Root vegetables such as carrots, beets, and turnips can now be safely sown outdoors. Be careful with beets though, as they can be very temperamental and we recommend covering them on cold nights.
So now that you know what to plant in May, it's time to roll up your sleeves and get to sowing!
