Planting Spinach:

  • A week before planting, prepare your soil with aged manure.
  • Alternatively, you can also prep your soil in the fall so that you can sow your seeds early in the spring.
  • If you live in a climate with mild winters, you can also plant in the fall.
  • Spinach seeds should be sown directly outdoors, as transplanting them can be difficult.
  • Because spinach is a cold weather crop, it's best to sow as soon as the ground thaws.
  • Select an area with full sun to light shade and well draining soil.
  • Sow the seeds 1/2 inch to 1 inch deep and cover lightly with soil.
  • Sow about 12 seeds per foot of row.
  • Water well.

Spinach Care:

  • Fertilization is only necessary if growth is slow. If needed, fertilize only once the plant reaches about 1/3 of its growth.
  • Once seedlings are about 2 inches tall, thin them to 3-4 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist with mulch.

Harvesting Spinach:

  • Harvest spinach as soon as the leaves have reached the desired size.
  • Don't wait too long though as more mature spinach leaves can have a bitter taste.
  • You can harvest the entire plant or just pick off individual leaves.

So now that you know how to plant spinach, it's time to roll up your sleeves and get to planting!
