If you have an herb garden, you may find yourself with way too many herbs at your disposal and you’ll eventually run out of things to do with them! Sure, you can give herbs to friends, make different dishes, and even freeze them in oil, but the best way of preserving herbs is to dry them! Do you know how to dry herbs the right way? There are a few different methods of drying herbs, and today we’ll share with you a few of our favorite and most popular methods!
How to Dry Herbs The Right Way

A good rule of thumb when choosing a method of drying is that drier herbs, such as oregano, dill, and rosemary, are better for the air drying method, while herbs that contain more moisture such as mint and basil are better suited for over drying.
Air Dry Method:
Gather your harvested herbs into small bunches of about 5-10 branches per bundle. Secure each bundle with a rubber band or some twine. Place each bundle stem up in a paper bag, and tie the bag closed. Poke a few holes in the bag to allow for air circulation and ventilation. Hang the bag by the stems in a warm place. Your air dried herbs should be ready within about 1 week!
Oven Dry Method:
Lay out the herbs you wish to dry in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Preheat your oven to its lowest setting, and warm your herbs for 2-3 hours. While the herbs are “baking”, keep the oven door slightly ajar to aid with circulation. Check periodically to make sure your herbs don’t burn. Once the herbs crumble in your fingers, they are done!
Whichever method you choose to dry your herbs, know that they will stay fresh for about 6 months if stored properly!
