How to Grow a Huge Blueberry Harvest

Blueberries are one of the funnest and most delicious variety of berry that you can grow, and today we'll show you a few tips and tricks on how to grow a HUGE blueberry harvest! When growing blueberries, we always recommend that you purchase a blueberry bush that's already about two years old. This is because when planting from seed or seedlings, a blueberry bush will take about 3 years to produce. Because blueberry bushes grow so big in size, we recommend growing dwarf varieties which will make just as many berries but will not take up as much space.

Some great dwarf varieties are Tophat, BrazelBerries, Jellybean, or Peach Sorbet. These varieties are great for both the garden and for containers.

Growing a Huge Blueberry Harvest

Soil:

• Blueberries prefer acidic soil with a pH between 4.0 and 5.5
• You can buy test kits at your local hardware store, OR you can test your soil at home without a kit. Check out how to check pH soil without a kit!
• If you find that the soil pH is too high, you can add some peat moss to bring it down.
• If your soil pH is too low, you can add a little bit of dolomite lime to the soil.
• You can grow these in a large pot or directly in the garden.
• Be sure the soil is acidic and grown in good quality, well draining, organic soil.

Watering:

• Make sure your soil is well draining and that your pots/containers have good drainage holes.
• Keep well watered, especially in the summer when your blueberry bush will need to be watered every day.

Fertilizing:

• Fertilize twice every spring. Once at the beginning of the season and once at the end of the season.
• Choose an acidic fertilizer such as those labeled for rhododendrons or azaleas.
• Alternatively, you can also use used coffee grounds in lieu of a traditional fertilizer due to its high acidic content.

Companion Plants:

• Plant together with strawberries.
• Avoid planting with tomatoes.
