Pomegranates are classified as fruit-bearing shrubs or small trees and are part of the Lythraceae family. These trees grow anywhere from 15-32 feet (5-10 meters) in height and grow from September to February in the Northern hemisphere and from March to May in the Southern hemisphere.
If you think you can't grow pomegranates because of the climate you live in though, think again! It is actually possible to grow pomegranates indoors! Keep reading to find out how to grow pomegranates indoors!
How to Grow Pomegranates Indoors – A DIY Gardening Guide
Because regular pomegranate trees can get quite tall, they are not ideal for indoor home growth. This is why most people grow dwarf pomegranate trees, which are much smaller, and ideal for indoor spaces. This dwarf version will only reach 2-4 feet in height, therefore not taking up much space at all!
Planting Your Pomegranate Tree:
Choose a sturdy pot or container that's about 12-14 inches in diameter and fill it with a good quality, commercial potting mix.
Plant your small tree into the pot and place the pot in the sunniest location possible. These trees need as much light as possible!
Caring For Your Pomegranate Tree
Water the tree deeply and be sure that soil is always moist, but never waterlogged. Be sure to never allow the soil to be bone dry – pomegranates love moist soil.
During spring and summer, feed the tree every other week with an all-purpose liquid fertilizer that's diluted to half strength.
Once the plant becomes rootbound, repot it to a larger size pot.
Prune the tree in early spring and remove any dead leaves or branches. For new and fuller growth, pinch the tips of new growth.
