Sunflowers are some of the most beautiful plants you can grow, not only because they're stunning to look at, but also because they provide you with delicious seeds that you can actually eat! Growing sunflowers ins't difficult as long as you follow these expert growing tips, although there is one very important thing they will always need, and that is (obviously) sun!
Sunflowers are annual plants and are part of the Aster family. There are over 70 varieties of sunflowers ranging from dwarf which are about 1-1/2 feet in height, to mammoth sunflowers, which can reach a staggering height of 8 feet!
Tips for Growing Sunflowers
#1. Soil
Fortunately, sunflowers aren't too picky about what type of soil they grow in, so you can sow seeds almost anywhere! Sow them directly in the ground, in pots, or in a garden bed, but make sure you amend the soil with plenty of organic matter. Sunflowers really thrive when organic matter is added, and this results in big, healthy flowers!
#2. Sunlight
There's a reason why these flowers are called sunflowers, and that is because they love the sun! Plant your sunflowers in an area where they will receive full sun exposure and you will be rewarded with healthy plants!
#3. Watering
Although sunflowers are drought resistant, they will fare much better if you water them regularly, especially once the flowers have developed.
#4. Planting
Sow seeds after the last frost date, once soil has warmed up. Plant seeds an inch deep and about 6-12 inches apart for best growth. Water immediately after planting.
#5. Harvesting Seeds
It will take about 80-120 days for the seeds to develop, and this will depend on which variety of sunflower you are growing. You'll know when the seeds are ready to harvest once the backs of the heads turn yellow and the seeds start to turn brown. To prevent birds and other animals from eating the seeds, cover the sunflower head with a cheesecloth, pantyhose, or a perforated bag.
